Richmond County school joins program to build strong homes



WEVE ALL SEEN WHAT NATURAL DISASTERS CAN DO TO BUT NOW ONE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL IS WORKING TO MAKE HOMES STRONGER. STRONGER. AND THEYRE JOING SOME PRETTY BIG SCHOOLS AND ORGANIZATIONS TO DO IT. NEWS 12S SAMANTHA ANDRE TELLS US HOW THIS GROUP IS TRYING TO KEEP YOU FROM BEING DEVASTATED BY DISASTER. DISASTER. THE SCHOOL IS RESEARCHING WHAT CAN MATERIALS CAN BUILD A STRONGER HOME... BUT THEYRE NOT JUST HELPING OTHERS...THEYRE HELPING THEMSELVES, TOO. TOO. NATS NAIL NAILJAHMAD SALEEM NEVER HAD A PASSION FOR SCIENCE... BUT NOW HE LIKES IT SO MUCH...HES TEACHING OTHER KIDS. ITS ALL PART OF THE RESILIENT HOME PROGRAM CROSS CREEK HIGH JUST BECAME PART OF. I think its really important because its a helping hand to a lot of people who really need help. CROSS CREEK IS THE ONLY HIGH SCHOOL IN THE NATION THATS PART OF THE PROJECT...JOING BIG NAMES LIKE ....CLEMSON...NC STATE...SRS....EVEN HOMELAND SECURITY. THE GOAL...TO GET HOMES STRONG AS CAN ...TO PREPARE FOR DISASTER. DISASTER.Its sime things. If youre going to replace your roof, why not replace your roof in a better stronger way, so the next time the huicane comes theres not quite as much damage. TIM SMAIL FROM SRS WANTED TO BE PART OF THE PROGRAM AFTER HELPING IN THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICANE KATRINA. SOMEONE WHO WENT ALONG WITH HIM? CROSS CREEKS PRINCIPAL. PRINCIPAL.The good thing was to see the outreach and people from all throughout the nation just coming down and helping out. It was good to be part of. NOW THE PRINCIPAL IS GLAD TO SEE HIS STUDENTS PART OF SOMETHING SO BIG....MEETING WITH ENGINEERS AND SHARING IDEAS. THE PROJECT...NOT JUST GOOD FOR THE COMMUNITY.... COMMUNITY....The students have become more focused on science. They see not only it being just a class they have to pass but theyre interested. Theyre excited about it. AND THAT EXCITEMENT...SPREADING ALL AROUND. AROUND.By working with them, the excitement they ing, the energy they bring to this program has just been great to energize us, keep us focused, keep us moving forward and realize we are focusing on lping people in the long run. ITS A NEW PARTNERSHIP...WITH THE GOAL OF MAKING HOMES BETTER... BUT ITS CHANGING LIVES IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE. AND THROUGH THE PROGRAM...STUDENTS HAVE HAD THE CHANCE TO VISIT COLLEGES LIKE NCSTATE AND CLEMSON. SOME EVEN WORKED ON A PROJECT IN CHARLESTON WHERE THEY BUILT A HOME OUT OF STEEL. STEEL. AND THE SCHOOL HOPES TO BUILD A HOME HERE IN THE AREA TOO, RIGHT? RIGHT? YEAH, THE PRINCIPAL WANTS TO USE THEIR RESEARCH AND BUILD A HOME THAT COULD STAND UP TO DISASTER. OF COURSE, THEYLL NEED MONEY FOR THE MATERIALS, SO THEY HAVE TO WORK ON THAT..BUT THEY HOPE TO DO IT IN THE NEXT YEAR OR SO. MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE TAKING CARE OF THEIR CAR

weve all seen what natural disasters can do to but now one local high school is working to make homes stronger. stronger. and theyre joing some pretty big schools and organizations to do it. news 12s samantha andre tells us how this group is trying to keep you from being devastated by disaster. disaster. the school is researching what can materials can build a stronger home... but theyre not just helping others...theyre helping themselves, too. too. nats nail nailjahmad saleem never had a passion for science... but now he likes it so much...hes teaching other kids. its all part of the resilient home program cross creek high just became part of. i think its really important because its a helping hand to a lot of people who really need help. cross creek is the only high school in the nation thats part of the project...joing big names like ....clemson...nc state...srs....even homeland security. the goal...to get homes strong as can ...to prepare for disaster. disaster.its sime things. if youre going to replace your roof, why not replace your roof in a better stronger way, so the next time the huicane comes theres not quite as much damage. tim smail from srs wanted to be part of the program after helping in the aftermath of hurricane katrina. someone who went along with him? cross creeks principal. principal.the good thing was to see the outreach and people from all throughout the nation just coming down and helping out. it was good to be part of. now the principal is glad to see his students part of something so big....meeting with engineers and sharing ideas. the project...not just good for the community.... community....the students have become more focused on science. they see not only it being just a class they have to pass but theyre interested. theyre excited about it. and that excitement...spreading all around. around.by working with them, the excitement they ing, the energy they bring to this program has just been great to energize us, keep us focused, keep us moving forward and realize we are focusing on lping people in the long run. its a new partnership...with the goal of making homes better... but its changing lives in more ways than one. and through the program...students have had the chance to visit colleges like ncstate and clemson. some even worked on a project in charleston where they built a home out of steel. steel. and the school hopes to build a home here in the area too, right? right? yeah, the principal wants to use their research and build a home that could stand up to disaster. of course, theyll need money for the materials, so they have to work on that..but they hope to do it in the next year or so. more and more people are taking care of their car
